Hello neighbors,
Dr. Sarah Berger, a neighborhood mom of 2 (Noah, 10, & Jordy, 18 months) and an associate prof. of psychology at CUNY (College of Staten Island & the Graduate Center) is doing several studies on cognitive development and learning in infants and toddlers in the context of locomotion - how infants make decisions about getting from "here to there," as well as how sleep affects motor learning in new crawlers and walkers. She is reaching out to local families who might be interested in sharing their child's development.

The studies can take place in your home, around your schedule, and are based solely on children's age or motor skill (sitting, crawling, walking,). From the babies' point of view, they would simply be playing games. Sarah and her students videotape the interaction and watch it later for the behaviors of interest to be as unobtrusive as possible. They can offer a small gift card to Gumbo as a thank-you for participating.

Feel free to contact Sarah with any & all questions. She has been collaborating with the Brooklyn Public Library, particularly the Babies & Books and Big Brooklyn Playdate programs where she speaks with caregivers about recent research in child development. She is happy to do something similar with neighborhood play groups if there is interest.
